Cannes 2010 line-up

Yesterday the Cannes Film Festival announced the films in competition for the 2010 edition. It contains the usual, but interesting mix of well-known returning filmmakers, as well as some new entries, which are arriving to  Cannes for the first time.  Some known names in this year’s competition include films by Takeshi Kitano (Outrage), Mike Leigh (Another Year), Abbas Kiarostami with “Copia Conforme” (shot in Italy), Jean-Luc Godard celebrates his 80 years with “Film Socialisme”, whilst Nikita Mikalkov returns with “Burnt by the sun 2″ and Bernard Tavernier and Manuel De Oliveira make appearances as well. Looking at the films and the producing countries, one can notice the small presence of English films. There are few American films represented in the competition; only Doug Liman. Nine out of sixteen films this year are produced – or co-produced – with French money. The number of film is also much smaller than the 20 entries witnessed last year, which leaves some space for more titles to be announced. Out of competition are more old names with new films, such as Woody Allen, Ridley Scott, Greg Araki, Otar Ioseliani, Stephen Friers and Oliver Stone.
