Silent cinema in Pordenone and Sydney

The Merry Widow / Erich von Stroheim (1925)

In Pordenone, Italy, David Robinson has opened the 29th edition of “Le giornate del cinema muto“, probably the oldest and most important silent film festival in the world. It is screening silent film from the 3rd to the 10th of October. This year, the festival is laden with classic old footage. Imagery dating back 100 years  from the Russian ballet, as well as Dreyer’s Die Gezeichneten (1922) and Brown’s The Eagle (1925) will be exhibited to audiences. The festival revisits the cinematic canon with pride and precision. After 6000 silent films screened in 30 years of festival film culture, it is time to rethink the canon of silent cinema, just as Cherchi Usai asserts in the introduction of this section.

A bit of silent film passion in Australia too. The Australian Silent films festival  will take place in Sydney in the  Dixson Room of the State Library of NSW in  Macquarie Street the 15, 18, 24 and 25 of October 2009. Small but interesting program with The Mark Of Zorro – 1920 (USA) The General – 1927 (USA) The Story of the Kelly Gang – 1906 (Australia) and The Sentimental Bloke – 1919 (Australia) Destiny – 1921 (Germany) Der Müde Tod, 7th Heaven – 1927 (USA) and more
